Jiangnan Examination Hall, Ancient examination complex in Nanjing, China.
The Jiangnan Examination Hall encompasses over 20,000 individual examination rooms within its vast 300,000-square-meter architectural complex near the Confucius Temple district.
Established in 1168 during the Southern Song dynasty, this examination center became the largest imperial testing facility after Nanjing became the capital in the Ming period.
The examination halls contained specific architectural elements, including thorny walls surrounding examination spaces to maintain complete isolation of candidates during testing periods.
Located at 1 Jinling Road, the museum opens from 8:30 AM with separate admission fees of 40 yuan for the North Hall and 25 yuan for the South Hall.
The facility produced 58 top scholars during its active period, with approximately half of China's highest-achieving examination candidates emerging from this testing center.
