China Comic and Animation Museum, Comic and animation museum in Binjiang District, Hangzhou, China
The China Comic and Animation Museum is a building with eight connected balloon-shaped structures in Hangzhou's Binjiang District. Inside are exhibition galleries, theaters, workshops, and interactive areas where visitors can try animation techniques themselves.
The museum opened in 2021 and resulted from an international architecture competition won by Dutch firm MVRDV. The construction was part of a major investment in Hangzhou's media and cultural infrastructure.
The collection displays Chinese comic and animation artwork arranged in a spiral route that shows how these art forms developed in the country. Visitors can see how styles and techniques changed over time.
The building has multiple theaters showing animation films regularly and hands-on areas where you can try stop-motion, green screen, and other techniques. Plan for enough time to try several activities since the workshops are popular spots.
The white concrete exterior features cartoon reliefs based on traditional Chinese vases and also serves as a surface for text projections. This dual function of the facade makes the building into more than just a container, blending old art with modern technology.
