Salesforce Park is a large green space in downtown San Francisco, built on the roof of a transit center. It has winding paths, lawns, benches, and gardens with plants from many parts of the world, plus a long shaded canopy and a glass floor looking down at the buses below.
The site opened in 2018 as part of the replacement for an older transit terminal in the same area. It turned a rooftop above bus ramps into a public garden, following a long local push for more open space downtown.
People come here during lunch breaks and after work to sit on the grass, watch musicians perform in the amphitheater, or join outdoor classes. The bamboo grove around the oculus is a favorite corner for reading and quiet conversation.
Wear comfortable shoes for the half-mile walking loop, and bring a light jacket because the exposed rooftop can be windy. The park is easy to reach by walking from nearby office buildings or using public transit stops just below.
The Bus Fountain runs along the park's edge and shoots water when buses pass beneath the surface, connecting the garden to the movement of the terminal below. Visitors can stand near the jets and watch the spray change with each arriving or departing bus.
