Puerto Ayora, city of Galágagos islands, Ecuador

Puerto Ayora is the main town on Santa Cruz Island and the largest inhabited place in the Galapagos. It has shops, cafes, and restaurants along a busy waterfront where fishing boats and cruise yachts depart to explore surrounding islands.

Puerto Ayora was founded to serve as a port and trading place for the growing settlement on Santa Cruz Island. The Charles Darwin Research Station was later built to protect and study the islands' unique wildlife, making the town a key center for conservation efforts in the Galapagos.

Puerto Ayora is a vital port and trading hub for local Ecuadorian communities, keeping fishing culture alive in the islands. The daily fish market along Charles Darwin Avenue shows how the community depends on the sea, with pelicans and sea lions gathering for scraps while people and wildlife share the same working space.

Most visitors arrive at the airport on Baltra Island and take a shuttle to the ferry that crosses the channel to Santa Cruz. Taxis and buses bring you from the ferry to Puerto Ayora, and it is a good idea to book your hotel in advance during busy times.

A surprising sight in the harbor is sea lions regularly resting on benches and docks as if they are residents watching boats and people go by. This close relationship between wildlife and humans in daily life is what sets the place apart from other coastal towns.
