Nimruz Province, Administrative division in southwestern Afghanistan
Nimruz Province is an administrative region in southwestern Afghanistan covered largely by desert terrain and one of the country's least populated areas. Zaranj serves as the main administrative center and largest city in this expansive territory.
The province was created as a separate administrative unit in 1968, following its division from the larger Chakhansur Province. This reorganization reshaped how the southwestern region was governed and managed.
Various ethnic groups including Baloch, Pashtun, and Tajik communities live across the province and maintain their own customs and ways of life in the scattered villages.
Travel through the province relies on roads connecting Zaranj, Delaram, and the Ring Road network, with the airport at Zaranj handling domestic flights. Visitor planning should account for limited infrastructure and seasonal variations that affect accessibility throughout the area.
The name comes from Persian and Balochi languages and refers to the meridian passing through the territory. It literally means "noon" or "half-day" and reflects the geographic position where the meridian divides the land.
