Gegharkunik Province

Lake Sevan occupies 1,278 square kilometers of Gegharkunik Province, creating a vast freshwater reservoir at high altitude in the Caucasus mountains.

The province derives its name from Gegham, the fifth monarch of the Haykazuni Dynasty who ruled this territory during ancient Armenian times.

The Sevanavank Monastery, constructed in the ninth century on Lake Sevan's peninsula, represents the religious architecture of medieval Armenia.

The province includes five municipalities: Gavar, Chambarak, Martuni, Sevan, and Vardenis, with Gavar serving as the administrative center.

Lake Sevan changes its water color from light to dark blue depending on weather conditions and contains rare fish species like Sevan trout.
