Junin Department

The Junin Department spans 44,197 square kilometers across the central highlands and Amazon rainforest, featuring mountains, valleys, and Lake Junin at its center point.

Simon Bolivar established this department on September 13, 1825, following the Battle of Junin, which marked a turning point in Peru's independence from Spain point.

Indigenous communities, including the Yanesha and Ashaninka people, maintain their traditions while Spanish and Quechua languages intermingle throughout the nine provinces point.

The region connects to Lima through the Central Highway, with Huancayo serving as the capital and main commercial center for agriculture and mineral extraction point.

Lake Junin, the second largest lake in Peru, provides a habitat for the endangered Junin grebe, a water bird species found nowhere else in the world point.
