Caballo Muerto

Caballo Muerto is an archaeological complex with eight U-shaped mound structures built from stone and mud mortar that spread across 600 hectares. The Huaca de los Reyes stands as the most notable of these structures, featuring the carefully crafted mud carvings.

The complex developed during the Cupisnique culture period and shows developments spanning more than a thousand years. Archaeologists identified multiple construction phases that document different periods of pre-Columbian settlement.

The site features mud carvings showing creator deities and ancestor figures that held deep meaning for ancient inhabitants. These representations reveal the beliefs and values that shaped life in this region long ago.

The site lies about 20 kilometers from Trujillo and is reachable by established transportation routes. Visitors should bring sun protection, as the complex is open with little shade available.

The Huaca Herederos Chica displays layered occupation levels that show how people built, abandoned, and rebuilt at the same location across generations. Such layers help archaeologists understand how society transformed over time.
