Calipuy National Reserve

Calipuy National Reserve is a large protected area in La Libertad spanning across multiple valleys and mountainous slopes. The terrain ranges from lower-lying plains to high alpine zones with different ecosystems as you move upward.

The reserve was established in 1981 by decree to protect the region's biodiversity. This decision was important to preserve threatened animal species across this landscape.

Archaeological remains show that people have lived in this area since ancient times. Visitors can discover traces of these earlier settlements scattered across different locations.

The area has marked hiking trails, camping spots, and routes for riders if you want to explore the terrain. The best time to visit depends on weather conditions, and it is wise to prepare for changing conditions.

This area is home to the northernmost population of guanacos in South America, a wild camelid species. These animals are a remarkable part of the ecosystem and show the special nature of this reserve.
