Cathedral of Our Lady of Carmen and San Pedro Apósto, Catholic cathedral in Chimbote, Peru.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Carmen and San Pedro Apostol is a large church with a Latin cross layout and a central dome crowning the structure. The building can hold roughly 1600 worshippers and displays clean architectural lines throughout its interior and exterior.

Construction began in 2002 under the direction of Bishop Luis Bambarén and Italian priest Ugo de Censi, with the building opening five years later. The completion of this cathedral marked the expansion of religious infrastructure in the area.

The retablos and pews were carved by the Artesanos Don Bosco of Chacas, a workshop founded by the Italian priest Ugo de Censi in the Callejón de Conchucos. The same team designed and built the cathedral, so the woodwork and the neoclassical shell come from one group of Chacas craftsmen.

The entrance is straightforward to locate and the interior is well-lit, making it easy to view the architecture and furnishings. Dress respectfully when entering this active place of worship and be prepared for religious services or ceremonies that might be happening during your visit.

The Latin text inside the dome quotes Matthew 16:18, "TV ES PETRVS...", but it uses the letter V where a U would stand, as in the Church of San Pedro in Lima. The same phrase appears in the Church of San Pedro in Chimbote.
