Peninsular Ranges, Mountain range system in California and Baja California, Mexico.
The Peninsular Ranges form a long mountain system that runs from Southern California down through the Baja California peninsula, with peaks rising over 10,000 feet (3,000 m). The ridges are made of granite and create a natural spine running along the coast.
The mountain range took shape millions of years ago during the Mesozoic era when granite rocks were pushed into older rock formations along the Pacific coast. This geological process created the landscape that exists today.
The cave paintings in the La Giganta section tell the story of indigenous peoples who made this region their home and left their mark on the rock walls. These artworks show how communities lived and expressed themselves in this landscape.
The northern sections are accessible via Interstate 10, while Mexican Highway 1 runs through the southern parts. Plan for changing weather and terrain as you move between different elevations.
The ranges contain distinct plant zones that change dramatically with elevation, from coastal shrubland at the base to conifer forests near the peaks. This vertical shift creates a botanical mosaic within a relatively small area.
