Mount Hopkins, Mountain summit in Santa Rita Mountains, Arizona, USA

Mount Hopkins rises to an elevation of 2,616 meters within the Coronado National Forest, featuring steep slopes and desert vegetation patterns.

The mountain received its name from Gilbert Hopkins, who lost his life during the Battle of Fort Buchanan in 1865.

The Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory on Mount Hopkins conducts research in astronomy through multiple advanced telescope installations.

Visitors can access the mountain via Elephant Head Road, which transitions to gravel and continues for 8 miles to reach the observatory gate.

The Multiple Mirror Telescope at Mount Hopkins utilizes adaptive optics with a secondary mirror to reduce atmospheric distortion effects.
