Punta de Chimino, Archaeological site in Sayaxché, Guatemala.

Punta de Chimino is a Maya settlement built on a peninsula jutting into Lake Petexbatun, with numerous stone structures, plazas, and raised platforms spread across the landscape. The buildings display typical Maya architectural features and reveal how people organized their living and ceremonial spaces.

The settlement was founded during the Classic period and reached significant development in the Late Classic era. Unlike many other regional centers of that time, this site maintained its population and continued economic activity while neighboring areas experienced collapse.

The site served as an important trading hub where people from different Maya communities gathered to exchange goods and maintain connections. These interactions shaped the daily life and prosperity of those living on the peninsula.

Reaching this site requires arranging a boat journey across the lake or a hiking path through dense jungle forest from Sayaxche. The dry season offers better conditions for travel, as forest paths become more passable and navigation easier.

The site features three defensive moats carved directly into bedrock, showing that inhabitants prepared for conflict and siege. These engineering works reveal a period when regional tensions were rising and communities needed protection.
