Lake Iguaque, Sacred mountain lake in Villa de Leyva, Colombia.

Lake Iguaque sits at 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) within a protected sanctuary surrounded by páramo ecosystems featuring frailejón plants and ferns. The route to reach it follows ten marked stations along a clearly defined hiking path through the mountain terrain.

Colombia established this flora and fauna sanctuary in 1977 to protect the lake and surrounding mountain territory spanning approximately 6.750 hectares. This conservation effort preserved both the fragile ecosystem and its cultural importance for future generations.

The Muisca people view this place as the birthplace of humanity, where the goddess Bachué emerged from the waters with a child. The lake holds deep spiritual meaning for local communities and represents a sacred connection to their ancestral origins.

The hike takes about six hours round trip with an elevation gain of roughly 1.400 meters starting from the visitor center. Proper footwear, adequate water, and weather-appropriate clothing are essential, as the terrain is steep and exposed to mountain conditions.

Researchers discovered a previously unknown sweat bee species near the lake and named it after the Muisca people to honor their indigenous connection. This discovery highlights how biodiverse the area remains and continues to reveal species unknown to science.
