Cómbita is a municipality in the Central Boyacá region situated at approximately 2,825 meters (9,270 feet) above sea level. The area covers roughly 149 square kilometers in the Andean highlands.
The municipality was established in 1586 under Muisca authority, governed by the zaque of Hunza from what is now Tunja. This early indigenous settlement laid the foundations for the region's development.
The name Cómbita comes from the Chibcha language of the Muisca people and means 'Hand of the jaguar and wheel of life'. This meaning reflects the indigenous connection to nature that shaped the community.
The area is known for grain cultivation including barley, wheat, and maize, as well as significant potato and legume production. Livestock farming is also prominent throughout the landscape and forms a key part of the local economy.
The municipality is home to renowned cyclists Nairo and Dayer Quintana, with Nairo winning several major international cycling races. This athletic legacy has gained the area recognition around the world.
