Morichales de Paz de Ariporo

Morichales de Paz de Ariporo is a protected area featuring extensive wetlands and Moriche palm forests across eastern Colombia. The landscape consists of shallow water bodies, flat terrain, and dense vegetation that spreads across a large expanse.

The area was originally known as Humedales de Casanare and later renamed to reflect its local identity more clearly. It entered Colombia's protection system to preserve the unique wetlands for future generations.

Local communities depend on the wetlands for their livelihoods and have shaped how the land is managed over generations. This relationship between people and nature remains visible in daily practices today.

The city of Yopal serves as the main starting point for reaching this protected area. Visitors should prepare for flat, wet terrain and bring appropriate footwear along with sun protection.

This location holds the largest concentration of wetlands in eastern Colombia and operates under strict protection standards. The Moriche palms that give the area its name are specially adapted to thrive in waterlogged conditions.
