Cholula, Ancient ceremonial site in Puebla, Mexico
Cholula is a city within San Pedro Cholula Municipality in Puebla state, sitting at the base of a large hill that conceals an ancient pyramid beneath. Streets wind through a mix of residential areas and sections with cafés, markets, and small plazas lined with trees.
The settlement emerged in pre-Hispanic times as a religious center and grew over many centuries until Spanish conquerors arrived in the 16th century and built a church atop the hill. This layering transformed the place into a symbol of change between two eras.
The church atop the hill bears the name Nuestra Señora de los Remedios and has drawn pilgrims for centuries, especially during September celebrations. Many locals connect the site with religious festivals where traditional music and processions shape the town's character.
The archaeological zone opens daily and provides access to underground tunnels that pass through parts of the pyramid. A small museum at the entrance displays pottery and tools recovered during excavations.
More than sixty chapels and churches spread across town, earning it the reputation of having a place to pray for every day of the year. Many of these buildings stand on spots where smaller pre-Hispanic temples once existed.
