Capulalpam de Méndez, Mountain town in Sierra Norte region, Mexico

Capulalpam de Méndez is a mountain town in the Sierra Norte region of Oaxaca, Mexico, situated at 2,073 meters elevation and featuring traditional adobe buildings. The surroundings are characterized by mountain landscapes and cloud forests of the Sierra Juárez.

The settlement emerged around 1200 when Zapotec people established their community and shaped the region's development. Official recognition by New Spain authorities came in March 1599.

The town preserves Zapotec traditions through annual festivals and local specialties like mole and homemade mezcal production. Visitors can observe this way of life directly in the streets and through interactions with residents.

The town offers accommodations in wooden cabins and camping sites suited to different budgets. Guided tours provide access to the surrounding cloud forest and landscape through organized paths.

A local healing center offers traditional treatments using medicinal plants and temazcal ceremonies rooted in ancient indigenous practices. These therapies represent living elements of Zapotec medical traditions.
