Mahahual

Mahahual is a coastal village on the Caribbean in Quintana Roo with sandy beaches and turquoise water. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef lies close to the shore and shapes the marine setting.

The village was originally a small fishing community that developed after the Costa Maya port was built in the early 2000s. The port brought cruise ships and changed the economic foundation of the region.

The name comes from mahahua trees, native plants that once shaped the local landscape. The place keeps this connection to nature in its identity, even though tourism has transformed its appearance.

The place is easy to reach from the Costa Maya port via a short road. The beaches and local businesses are within walking distance from the waterfront.

About half the population comes from outside Quintana Roo state and relocated here later. This mix of long-term residents and newcomers shapes how the community functions.
