Somis, Census-designated place in Ventura County, United States
Somis is a rural community in the Las Posas Valley area of Ventura County, positioned along the south bank of Fox Barranca. The settlement combines farmland with scattered residential and small commercial development.
Thomas Bard and D.T. Perkins founded the community in 1892 on land from the Mexican Rancho Las Posas land grant. This founding established the settlement as part of the county's growing agricultural region.
The name comes from the Chumash language and means 'water of the scrub oak,' reflecting how the original inhabitants referred to this valley location.
The community has a hardware store, grocery market with a cafe, post office, and elementary school for local needs. Emergency services are provided by Ventura County Sheriff and Fire departments.
In 2015, Forbes Magazine ranked the local postal code 93066 among the most expensive in the nation. This recognition highlights how property values in this rural area compare with wealthy communities elsewhere.
