Historic Virginia Key Beach Park

Historic Virginia Key Beach Park spreads along more than a mile of shoreline with mangroves and palm trees along Biscayne Bay near downtown Miami. The park provides picnic tables, beachfront cabins, and trails suitable for mountain biking.

The beach opened in 1945 as a designated swimming area for African Americans following successful protests against segregation. This founding represented an important moment in Miami's struggle against racial separation.

During the 1950s, this beach served as a central hub where Miami's African American community gathered for worship and celebrations. This legacy continues to shape how the place is understood and valued today.

The park is open daily from 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM and can be explored on foot or by bike along its trails. Arriving in the morning gives you the best views and fewer crowds to navigate around.

The grounds feature an antique carousel and a miniature heritage train that transport visitors back in time. These attractions offer a nostalgic experience alongside the natural setting.
