Dr. James M. Jackson Office

The Dr. James M. Jackson Office is a one-story building in the Classical style located in Brickell, featuring wide porches and Doric columns designed specifically for Miami's hot and humid climate. The open areas were arranged to allow air circulation and let patients wait in the shade.

Dr. James M. Jackson opened his practice in this building in 1905 and became Miami's first resident physician. His work shaped the medical services of the young city as it was growing and expanding.

The building shows how doctors and patients met in Miami's early days and how such offices became part of community life. The porch with its columns was a typical gathering spot where people waited and talked together.

The building stands on a street in Brickell that is easy to reach, and visitors can easily see and photograph the architecture from outside. The Dade Heritage Trust now uses the location as an office, so it is wise to check ahead for when exterior visits are possible.
