Walgreen Drug Store, commercieel gebouw in de Verenigde Staten
The Walgreen Drug Store is a five-story building in downtown Miami that opened in 1937 with Streamline Moderne architecture featuring smooth lines and a rounded corner. The structure has large windows that flood the interior with light and was originally equipped with advanced amenities including air conditioning, an 88-foot soda fountain, and two on-site restaurants.
The building was constructed in 1936 and opened as a Walgreens store on October 2, 1937, drawing over 35,000 visitors on its opening day despite having only 300 staff members. After closing in 1995, it was repurposed as a department store and sports retailer before being transformed into the Julia & Henry's food hall in 2023.
The building's name honors Julia Tuttle and Henry Flagler, two key figures in Miami's early history. The ground floor now houses a food hall with numerous restaurants and bars, creating a gathering space where people from across the city come together to eat and socialize.
The building sits at the corner of East Flagler Street in downtown Miami and is easily walkable from nearby transit stops. Entrances are accessible from street level, and stairs and elevators connect the different floors housing restaurants, bars, and retail spaces.
The soda fountain in the original Walgreens store stretched 88 feet long, with candy and ice cream made fresh on site daily. The basement restaurant named JOLENE in the redesign mimics speakeasy design from Prohibition times, blending the site's history with contemporary experience.
