Walt Disney World Airport, Former airfield in Walt Disney World Resort, Florida
Walt Disney World Airport was a former airfield located within the Walt Disney World Resort grounds, equipped with a single runway for small commuter aircraft. The facility provided a direct transportation link for guests arriving from nearby cities to reach the resort's attractions.
Disney opened this airfield in 1971 as part of an ambitious plan to improve visitor access to the resort. The facility played a role during the early growth years of the resort as a self-contained travel destination.
The facility represented Disney's vision of creating an integrated transportation network that would make the resort more accessible to guests from different regions.
The former site is no longer active for flight operations and has been converted into a storage area. Visitors can glimpse the remaining structures from World Drive or while riding the monorail system.
The runway featured specially grooved surfaces that produced the melody of "When You Wish Upon a Star" when driven over at the correct speed. This whimsical touch showed how Disney incorporated entertainment into even the most functional parts of the resort.
