Bonneville Dam, Hydroelectric gravity dam on Columbia River, United States

The Bonneville Dam spans 1056 meters across the Columbia River between Multnomah County, Oregon, and Skamania County, Washington, incorporating two separate powerhouses.

Construction of the first powerhouse started in 1934 during the Great Depression, providing employment opportunities through the Public Works Administration until completion in 1937.

The Bradford Island Visitor Center displays exhibits about the regional power generation, river navigation systems, and Native American fishing traditions along the Columbia River.

The dam generates electricity for 500,000 homes annually while operating a lock system that enables commercial vessels to navigate 465 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean.

Fish ladders built into the dam structure allow observers to watch salmon, steelhead, and shad migrate through underwater viewing windows during their seasonal journeys.
