Olancha Peak, Summit in Sierra Nevada, California.
Olancha Peak is a mountain summit in the southern Sierra Nevada in California, sitting on the boundary between Inyo County and Tulare County. The peak is made of granite, has steep sides, and sits far from most of the range's main trails.
The area around Olancha Peak was crossed by surveyors in the 19th century who mapped the southern Sierra Nevada for early US government records. The peak served as a natural reference point for groups moving between the Owens Valley and coastal California.
Olancha Peak is considered one of the southernmost high summits of the Sierra Nevada and draws climbers who prefer remote, less-traveled routes. On clear days, the top offers a wide view over the Owens Valley and the dry lakebed below.
The most common approach starts at the Sage Flat trailhead and requires strong fitness and experience on unmarked mountain terrain, as much of the upper route has no clear path. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable conditions, when snow has largely melted from the upper slopes.
Olancha Peak has an unusually high topographic prominence for a summit that is not among the Sierra Nevada's most famous, meaning it rises far above the surrounding terrain on all sides. This quality places it among the top-ranked peaks in North America by prominence.
