Cooke City-Silver Gate, Mountain gateway community in Park County, Montana.
Cooke City-Silver Gate is a mountain community in Montana near Yellowstone National Park's northeastern entrance. The two connected settlements sit at high elevation in remote terrain surrounded by forested mountains.
The settlement began as a mining town during the 19th century when prospectors came to the mountains seeking ore deposits. The two communities developed side by side and were later combined in census records.
The former mining settlement maintains connections to its industrial heritage through local establishments, including the Miners Saloon and numerous preserved structures.
The Beartooth Highway provides vehicle access from late spring through mid-fall, while winter snow closes this route. Visitors arriving in cold months need to plan alternative ways to reach the area.
The location marks the western terminus of the Beartooth Highway, one of the country's highest mountain roads. Extended winter snow makes this place one of the most isolated communities in the region.
