Nanjing University, Public research university in Nanjing, China.
Nanjing University is a public research institution with four locations across the region, including the central Gulou campus, the modern Xianlin campus, a campus in Pukou district, and an outpost in Suzhou. The institution offers programs in natural sciences, humanities, engineering, medicine, and social sciences.
The institution began in 1902 as Sanjiang Normal School during the late Qing Dynasty. After several renamings, it received its current name in 1950.
The Gulou campus in central Nanjing sits among old plane trees and classic university buildings from the early twentieth century. Students use the shaded paths between faculties, while small groups gather on the lawns for exchange.
The Gulou campus sits near Xinjiekou metro station and is easy to reach from most city neighborhoods. The Xianlin campus in the east requires a longer journey but offers newer facilities and more green space.
The library on the Gulou campus holds rare editions of Chinese classical texts from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Visitors find historic wooden bookshelves alongside modern workspaces in the reading rooms.
