Heidenheim district is located in eastern Baden-Württemberg on the Swabian Alb plateau and contains eleven municipalities with Heidenheim an der Brenz as its administrative center. The territory includes rolling hills, forested areas, and several small to medium-sized towns connected through local roads.
The area formed in the early 19th century from the Oberamt Heidenheim and expanded when it merged with Oberamt Giengen. These administrative reforms shaped the region into its current form.
