Untersberg, Alpine mountain group at Bavaria-Salzburg border, Germany and Austria
Untersberg is a mountain group on the border between Bavaria and the Salzburg region, with its main summit reaching 1972 meters (6470 feet). The limestone walls drop sharply, while marked trails wind upward through alpine meadows and forest bands.
The cable car system was built between 1958 and 1961, linking the Salzburg countryside to the upper slopes. This construction changed access to the high country and opened the peaks to day visitors.
The name comes from medieval German words describing its position below higher peaks in the region. Hikers often meet locals from both sides of the border who share knowledge about trails and weather patterns.
The cable car runs daily from the valley near Grödig and brings visitors to the upper station in minutes. Hikers should watch for changing weather and carry extra layers for wind and cooler temperatures.
The border between the two countries runs across the summit area, so you can step from one nation to the other in seconds. Many visitors hardly notice the crossing because no markers are visible on the ground.
