Phthiotis Regional Unit

Phthiotis is an administrative unit in Central Greece that spans mountains, plains, and coastal areas positioned between Athens and Thessaloniki. The region borders the Malian Gulf and comprises seven municipalities with Lamia serving as its administrative center.

The area underwent administrative restructuring in 2011, transforming from a prefecture into a regional unit through the Kallikratis reform. This change reorganized how local government operated across the territory.

In ancient times, this region was known as Phthia, the legendary birthplace of the warrior Achilles in Greek mythology and epic literature. The connection to these classical tales still shapes how people understand this part of Greece today.

The region is easily accessed through Lamia, which serves as the main transportation hub connecting all parts of the area. Visitors should know that the varied terrain means travel between mountain and coastal zones takes time.

The Spercheios River flows through the region and creates a natural valley that connects the mountains to the Malian Gulf. This river valley has long served as a key passage for people and goods between the interior and the coast.
