Pic Occidental de Clarabide, Mountain summit in Benasque, Spain and Hautes-Pyrénées, France
Pic Occidental de Clarabide is a rocky peak of around 3000 meters situated on the border between Spain and France in the Pyrenees. It forms part of the Perdiguero massif and is characterized by steep terrain and exposed stone formations.
Shepherds established routes through this high terrain during the 19th century as they moved their animals across the mountain landscape. These old pathways remain visible and are still used by climbers approaching the summit.
The peak holds meaning for mountain communities on both sides of the border, where locals and climbers speak of it as a place that brings people together across the frontier.
Visitors should plan their climb between July and September when weather is most stable for this exposed terrain. Advanced mountaineering skills and proper equipment are required, as the rocky slopes demand experience in steep climbing.
From the summit, visitors can see both the Benasque Valley and the high peaks of the Hautes-Pyrénées on clear days. This unusual vista occurs because this stretch of the ridge sits at a geological junction where tectonic structures meet along the border.
