Nógrád County, Administrative county in Northern Hungary.
Nógrád County spans 2,545 square kilometers across mountainous terrain, featuring the Börzsöny, Cserhát, and Mátra ranges with valleys containing numerous small settlements.
The county originated from the medieval Nógrád fortress during Stephen I's reign, with one-third of its northern territories becoming part of Czechoslovakia after World War I.
The population includes Hungarian descendants of the Palóc ethnic group, along with Slovak communities in Nógrád, Bánk, and Felsopetény, plus German residents in Szendehely.
The region contains six administrative districts centered around Salgótarján, the county capital, with agricultural production focusing on grains, sunflowers, potatoes, and lentils.
The village of Hollókő within Nógrád County received UNESCO World Heritage status in 1987 for preserving traditional Hungarian architecture and folk customs.
