Bhagirathi River, Sacred river in Uttarakhand, India
Bhagirathi is a mountain river in Uttarakhand that originates at Gangotri Glacier and winds through deep valleys. The water flows over rocky ledges and forms rapid currents as the river threads between steep mountain slopes.
The river received its name from ancient scriptures connecting it to the mythical king. Over centuries, landslides and floods altered its course until it merged with Alaknanda to form the modern Ganges.
Religious pilgrims consider the water flowing from Gaumukh sacred and collect it in containers for rituals at home. The name Bhagirathi comes from King Bhagiratha, who according to legend brought the river down from heaven to earth.
Currents are particularly strong during monsoon season and spring snowmelt when the water turns cloudy and cold. Visitors should prepare for slippery paths along the banks and wear sturdy footwear.
The glacier at the origin of the river retreats several meters each year due to rising temperatures. In some places along the course, you can still find old stone trade routes that caravans used centuries ago.
