Junagadh Lok Sabha constituency, Electoral district in Gujarat, India
Junagadh Lok Sabha constituency is a parliamentary seat in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, western India, covering several districts and administrative subdivisions. It sends one elected member to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's parliament in New Delhi.
The Junagadh constituency was set up in 1962, shortly after Gujarat was formed as a separate state in 1960, as part of the first round of defining the new state's electoral boundaries. Since then, it has gone through several rounds of delimitation that changed which administrative areas it covers.
The name Junagadh means "old fort" in Gujarati, and the ancient citadel it refers to is still visible in the landscape today. Visitors walking through the area often notice how temples, mosques, and dargahs stand close together, reflecting the mix of communities that have shared this region for generations.
Junagadh city serves as a natural starting point for moving around the constituency, with road and rail connections reaching most of the surrounding areas. During election seasons, public spaces and local markets tend to be noticeably more active than at other times of the year.
A notable portion of the constituency borders the Gir Forest, the only place in the world where Asiatic lions live in the wild. This means that questions about land use and wildlife coexistence are a regular part of local political debates in a way that is rare for any parliamentary seat anywhere.
