Mir Alam Tank, Artificial lake in Hyderabad, India

Mir Alam Tank is an artificial water reservoir in Hyderabad covering approximately 260 acres. The structure features 21 semicircular arched dams made of masonry positioned along its perimeter near the Nehru Zoological Park.

This reservoir was completed in 1806 under Prime Minister Mir Alam's direction during the reign of Asaf Jah III. The French engineer Michel Joachim Marie Raymond played a key role in designing this water storage system.

The tank takes its name from Mir Alam Bahadur, diwan of Hyderabad from 1804 to 1808 under Asaf Jah III. Its 21 semicircular masonry dams are still visible along the edge, and the adjacent Nehru Zoological Park, opened on 6 October 1963, draws its water from the reservoir. A musical fountain was inaugurated at the tank on 9 April 2022.

Boats run on the tank by Telangana Tourism, but boarding is only through the adjacent Nehru Zoological Park, so plan the boat ride as part of a zoo visit. City buses reach the tank from Secunderabad Railway Station (routes 7Z and 49), Kothi (94, 95) and Afzal Gunj (74, 73, 251); the nearest MMTS station is Dabirpura.

The 21 connected arched structures were designed by French engineer Michel Joachim Marie Raymond and continue to function after more than 200 years. This long-lasting durability shows the quality of the original construction that has survived changing seasons through generations.
