Hyderabad Old City, Historic walled settlement in Hyderabad, India.
The Old City spreads across the southern bank of the Musi River with narrow lanes lined with wooden doors and traditional architecture. Fortified walls once surrounded the entire district, creating a distinct historical settlement with a clear boundary from the surrounding areas.
Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah founded this settlement in 1591 and surrounded it with fortified walls for protection. A major river flood in 1908 caused significant damage to these walls and reshaped parts of the district.
The architecture blends Persian and Indian styles in mosques, temples, and markets that show centuries of cultural exchange. You see this mix throughout the narrow lanes where different communities have built their meeting places side by side.
You can reach this area easily by auto rickshaw, city bus, or the nearby Malakpet metro station. Walking through the narrow lanes is the best way to explore, so wear comfortable shoes and allow plenty of time to wander.
The Salar Jung Museum here holds one of the world's largest single-person collections of artifacts and artwork. Built over many years, this collection reveals the personal passions and travels of a former Prime Minister of the region.
