Mana, Mountain village in Chamoli district, India
Mana is a mountain village at approximately 3,200 meters (10,500 feet) elevation in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, situated near the India-Tibet border within the Himalayan range. The settlement occupies a high-altitude location surrounded by rocky terrain and steep slopes that define its geography.
The village served as a key point on trade routes connecting Tibet and the Indian subcontinent for centuries, with regular commerce between communities. Geopolitical shifts in the 20th century severed these direct connections and transformed its economic role.
The local Marchhas and Bhotias communities maintain traditional crafts passed down through generations, with textile work visible throughout daily life in the village. This heritage shapes how residents interact with their mountain environment and each other.
The entire population relocates to lower elevations during winter months when heavy snowfall renders the area inaccessible and the village temporarily uninhabitable. Visitors should plan to arrive during warmer months when roads remain open and residents are present.
Near the village stands Vyasa Gufa, a cave where tradition holds that the sage Vyasa composed the Mahabharata epic. Nearby is Bhimpul, a natural rock bridge crossing a stream that has been used by locals for generations.
