Iwate Prefecture, Prefecture in northern Tohoku, Japan

The second largest prefecture in Japan encompasses 15,275 square kilometers of Pacific coastline, mountains, and valleys between Aomori and Miyagi prefectures.

The March 2011 tsunami struck Iwate's Pacific coast, causing extensive damage to coastal communities and prompting substantial reconstruction efforts in subsequent years.

The Buddhist temples of Hiraizumi, including Chuson-ji and Motsu-ji, represent the former political center of northern Japan during the 12th century.

The Michinoku Coastal Trail extends 435 miles through Iwate, offering hikers multiple sections with varying difficulty levels and access to coastal landmarks.

Ryusendo Cave contains three of the clearest underground lakes in Japan, reaching depths of 120 meters and housing five species of bats.
