De Vliegende Hollander, Water coaster at Efteling, Netherlands
De Vliegende Hollander is a water coaster with dark ride elements at Efteling, Netherlands, where boats travel through indoor and outdoor sections along a 420-meter (1378-foot) track. The installation combines story rooms with a water flume and multiple drops.
The attraction opened on April 1, 2007, after construction delays pushed back the originally planned debut of April 16, 2006. Development took several years and included the design of indoor rooms and the water course.
The attraction follows the legend of Captain Willem van der Decken, who set sail on Easter Sunday in 1678 and faced supernatural forces at sea. Guests experience the story through scenery and scenes that retell the curse of the ghost ship.
The coaster reaches speeds of 70 kilometers per hour (43 miles per hour) and boats drop from a height of 22.5 meters (74 feet). The installation can carry roughly 1900 riders per hour.
The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra recorded sixteen synchronized musical segments that accompany riders through different sections of the experience. Each section has its own soundtrack that shifts with the scenes.
