Karot Hydropower Project, Hydroelectric power station on Jhelum River, Punjab Province, Pakistan
Karot Hydropower Project is a run-of-river power station on the Jhelum River in Punjab that generates electricity without large water storage. The installation uses a rockfill dam approximately 96 meters tall to direct water flow through four turbines that convert the movement into power.
Construction started in 2016 following feasibility studies by Canadian consultants and was completed in 2022. The development was part of broader efforts to increase power supply in the region.
The development required careful coordination between Chinese investors, Pakistani authorities, and local communities, leading to the relocation of 72 households.
The site sits in a populated valley and can be partially seen from nearby roads. Visitors should note that this is an active industrial facility with safety regulations that may restrict close access.
This facility represents the first investment of China's Silk Road Fund, operating under a 30-year agreement before transferring ownership to the Pakistani government.
