Ploutonion at Hierapolis, Ancient temple in Turkey
The Ploutonion at Hierapolis was a religious site dedicated to the god Pluto, located in the ancient city of Hierapolis near modern-day Pamukkale in Turkey.
Built in the 2nd century BC, it was known as a 'gate to Hell' due to the deadly mephitic vapors it emitted.
In ancient times, pilgrims would travel to the site to witness the strange phenomena and offer sacrifices to Pluto.
Today, the site is open to tourists who can explore the ruins and learn about its fascinating history.
Despite the lethal gases, small birds and insects are able to live within the vicinity of the Ploutonion.
