Northumberland National Park, National park and International Dark Sky Park in Northumberland, England.

Northumberland National Park is a protected area in northeast England that stretches between the Scottish border and Hadrian's Wall. The landscape shows wide valleys, open moorlands, and grass-covered hills with dry stone walls separating pastures from heath.

The area was designated a national park in 1956 and protects remains of Roman forts along Hadrian's Wall. Medieval castles and prehistoric rock carvings show that people have lived in this region for thousands of years.

The name comes from the historic county that stretched along England's northern frontier. Visitors today can see shepherding traditions in the hills and walk routes that herders have used for centuries.

Several information points offer maps and advice on walking trails that vary in accessibility depending on season and weather. Sturdy footwear and warm clothing are recommended, as moorlands can change conditions quickly.

The rivers here are among the cleanest in all of England and support rare fish species that need clear water. The area also forms the largest protected dark sky zone in Europe and draws stargazers from many countries.
