Budapest District II, Administrative division in northwestern Budapest, Hungary
District II is a residential area in northwestern Budapest situated across rolling hills on the Buda side of the Danube River. The area contains several neighborhoods with different characters, mixing tree-lined streets with leafy slopes and urban blocks.
The area became part of Budapest in 1873 when Pest, Buda, and Óbuda merged to form the modern Hungarian capital. It had been inhabited and developed through centuries before this unification brought it into the city's official structure.
The district reflects layers of different religious traditions, from Christian churches to traces of multicultural coexistence that shaped its character. This mixing of influences is still visible in how people use the streets and public spaces today.
The area is well served by the Széll Kálmán tér transportation hub, where buses, trams, and the metro connect to different parts of the city. The hilly terrain means some walking routes can be steep, but multiple neighborhoods are linked by the same transport network.
Beneath the district runs a network of limestone caves, including the known cave of Szemlő Hill. These underground chambers are a geological feature that many visitors walking above them never notice.
