Whaleshead Beach

Whaleshead Beach is a sandy shore along the Oregon coast bordered by high cliffs and marked by dramatic rock formations rising from the ocean. Tidal pools form in the rocks at lower water levels, revealing starfish, anemones, and other sea creatures.

Indigenous communities along the Pacific coast used this area for harvesting seafood and conducting rituals connected to ocean life before European contact. The landscape has remained largely unchanged since that time, preserving its natural character.

You can reach the beach by two routes: a steep trail from the overlook or a gentler path along Whaleshead Beach Road. The best time to explore the tide pools is during low tide when the water recedes to reveal more of the rocky areas.

When waves strike a channel within the central sea stack, water shoots upward mimicking a whale's spout, especially during rough ocean swells. This natural display happens regularly and creates a memorable moment for those watching.
