Helmand Province

The Helmand River flows through this vast province of 58,584 square kilometers, making it the largest administrative region in Afghanistan with 18 districts.

Established as a separate province from Greater Kandahar during the 20th century, Helmand became a central location for military operations between 2001 and 2021.

The population of 1.4 million inhabitants consists mainly of Pashtun communities, with smaller groups of Baloch, Tajik, and Hazara people living across 1,000 villages.

The Kajaki Dam in the northern district supplies water resources for agricultural activities, enabling the cultivation of cotton, wheat, and various fruit crops.

The province contains extensive irrigation systems, including the Nahr-e Saraj canal, which transformed desert territories into agricultural land during the early 1900s.
