Helmand Province

Helmand Province sits in southern Afghanistan and covers a wide area marked by desert landscapes and river plains. It divides into 18 districts that range from irrigated fields to barren plateaus.

Large irrigation projects began in the early 20th century, turning dry areas into farmland. During recent decades, the region became the site of numerous military conflicts.

The name Helmand comes from the river that runs through the entire territory and has shaped life here for centuries. Along its banks, settlements emerged where traditional crafts and farming still define daily routines today.

The province can be reached by overland roads, though routes may vary depending on season and weather. Travel within the region requires local knowledge and adapted planning.

The old canal systems from the early 1900s still function in part today and supply remote villages with water. Some of these structures survived decades despite difficult conditions in the region.
