La Libertad Department, Administrative region in northern Peru

La Libertad Department spans across coastal areas, mountains, and rainforest regions, covering 25,499 square kilometers with Trujillo as its capital city.

The territory gained independence from Spain in 1820 and received its current name in 1825, replacing its former designation as the Department of Trujillo.

The department holds numerous archaeological remains from the Moche and Chimu civilizations, including Chan Chan, the largest pre-Columbian adobe city in South America.

The region produces substantial quantities of sugar cane and rice, while maintaining active fishing operations and agricultural exports through the port of Salaverry.

La Libertad incorporates all three of Peru's natural regions: the Pacific coast, the Andean mountains, and sections of the Amazon rainforest within its boundaries.
