Baños, Adventure tourism center in Tungurahua Province, Ecuador
Baños sits at 1820 meters (about 6000 feet) on the northern slope of Tungurahua volcano, where the Andes meet the Amazon basin. The town is surrounded by green hillsides and serves as a base for hiking, cycling, and visiting nearby waterfalls.
In 1999, the entire population of 17,000 left the town when the volcano became more active. After months of uncertainty, people returned and rebuilt their lives here.
This Catholic pilgrimage site draws its name from the mineral springs that flow here, which locals and travelers have long visited for their warmth. Today, people come for both the springs and the outdoor activities around the nearby volcano.
The bus terminal near the center links the town to major cities across the country, with trips to Quito taking around three and a half hours. Most guesthouses and tour operators sit within the compact center, which is easy to explore on foot.
The waterfall route passes seven large cascades, including Pailón del Diablo, which visitors reach by foot, bicycle, or guided tour. Many of the paths follow old trade routes once used by farmers and merchants traveling between the highlands and the rainforest.
