Ambato Canton

Ambato Canton sits in the central Andes of Ecuador at roughly 2,600 meters elevation and covers around 1,000 square kilometers. The area contains several municipalities, with some located in the urban core and others spread throughout rural regions.

The area received its official administrative structure in 1824 after independence movements shaped the region. This organization helped establish how communities and farming activities would be managed over time.

The Fruits and Flowers Festival each February reveals how deeply local communities are tied to farming and the land. During these celebrations, processions and displays show how central this agricultural tradition remains to everyday life.

The best time to visit is February when numerous Fruits and Flowers events take place. Visiting during daylight hours gives travelers the best chance to explore the villages, markets, and farm areas.

The canton blends nine urban municipalities with eighteen rural ones, creating a mix of city life and farming. This arrangement allows both areas to coexist and support each other's needs.
