Serengeti District, District in Mara Region, Tanzania
Serengeti District is an administrative area within the Mara Region of northern Tanzania, covering open grasslands, scattered granite outcrops known as kopjes, and small rural villages. The main town, Mugumu, sits close to the western gate of Serengeti National Park and serves as the district's administrative center.
The area has long been home to Maasai communities who moved across the land with their cattle following seasonal patterns. In the 20th century, the territory was formally organized into an administrative district and part of its land was set aside as a protected national park.
Many residents of the district belong to the Maasai community, who have herded cattle across these grasslands for generations and are recognized by their colorful clothing. In small villages around Mugumu, visitors may come across local markets and community gatherings where traditional music and crafts are part of everyday life.
Most roads in the district are unpaved, so travelers should expect rough journeys and allow extra time, especially during rainy seasons when tracks can become muddy. Mugumu is a good base to start from, as it offers basic services and access to the national park's western gate.
The district shares a border directly with Kenya's Maasai Mara reserve to the north, and animals cross this border freely without any barrier. This makes the area part of a larger ecosystem that functions as a single connected territory across two countries.
